Researchers from the University of Washington and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered magnetism in monolayers. Monolayers are materials with  a single atomic layer.  Chromium triiodide was known to have intrinsic magnetic properties but the fact that it retains these properties in a single atomic layer is very big news. This development could make computing devices smaller and faster than has previously been thought possible.
