Thousands of Twitter accounts including BBC North America, Duke University, EU Parliament and several French politicians as well as popular celebrities were hijacked by hackers this morning and used to spread political propaganda. The messages were all in Turkish and included swastikas and hashtags referring to Holland and Germany as "Nazi".
The messages are related to growing tensions between Turkey and the Netherlands and refer to a Turkish referendum coming on April 16th. The hack seems to be linked to a third-party app called Twitter Counter. Both Twitter and the third-party company have worked to restore control of these accounts back to their rightful owners and are promising to repair the vulnerability that was exploited.
