The worlds most technologically advanced cable is now lying 17,000 feet under the Atlantic Ocean. The Marea subsea cable runs 4,000 miles from Virginia Beach to Bilbao, Spain and can transmit up to 160 terabits of data per second. Microsoft and Facebook teamed up with infrastructure company Telxius to complete the project in less than 2 years.  According to Microsoft that's almost three times faster than an undertaking like this would normally last.  Connection issues caused by Hurricane Sandy made it clear that major connection hubs need to be spread out to more locations in order to prevent catastrophic network disruptions.  The cable is specifically designed to be interoperable with a wide variety of equipment, and to evolve as technology changes and demand for data continues to grow
